Warblers and Waders

Dungeness - 0530 - 0900hrs - cool, sunny, NW 2 - Following a dollop of welcome rain yesterday evening (the first for about a month) the day dawned bright and fresh, ideal conditions then to continue on with a Cetti`s Warbler survey around the bird reserve (55 territories so far...). Along the way the warbler tribe were in fine voice with nine species heard, including singles of Garden and Willow Warblers. The four species of breeding waders were complemented by a few passage birds around the hayfields: eight Whimbrels, two Bar-wits, a Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank, plus my first Common Sandpiper of spring on Burrowes. Also noted across the site plenty of Marsh Harrier activity, three `boomers`, two Cuckoos (Hookers and Tower pits), a perched Hobby, a family of Stonechats, Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Shelduck and Pochard, and a  Barn Owl returning to Boulderwall with prey (small rodent), so presumable feeding juveniles. As the reserve was closed I had the place to myself, how wonderful!
