Cool, cloudy, SW3 - The day started dry and sunny with light airs; with no live firing on the ranges and the tide out I decided to head for Jury`s gap and a walk along the Midrips to the Wickes in company with Colin Turley. The lagoons were devoid of waders with only a mixed flock of 50 Wigeon and Teal on the Wickes, plus two Wheatears, 20 Meadow Pipits, 30 Linnets and a Yellow Wagtail along the way. However, on the return walk the American Golden Plover had landed on the shingle by the security hut within a flock of 90 Golden Plovers. A check of Scotney front fields revealed 10 Ruffs and two Curlews amongst hundreds of feral geese.
The MidripsMoving onto a busy bird reserve where 10 Glossy Ibises were noted along the Lydd Road and another four on the Boulderwall fields, plus six Cattle Egrets. The juvenile Red-backed Shrike showed well from the first bend in the access road while a Redstart was noted further along the track. Also noted elsewhere: Buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Great White Egret, Common Sandpiper and a Dunlin. We finished the day with an hour at the fishing boats logging a steady stream of passing Sandwich Terns, a few Common Terns, Gannets and Arctic Skuas, two Guillemots, a Little Tern, three Kittiwakes and a distant Manx Shearwater.
