Red-breasted Flycatcher

Dungeness - warm, dry, light airs - Surprisingly, yesterday`s Red-breasted Flycatcher, found by Dave Bunney (his third for the garden!) took the B&B option due to the abundance of food and decided to stay over. We were soon on site and watching this classic east coast autumn migrant as it hawked insects from various bushes on the estate gardens before retiring into Dave`s fir trees. During the hour or so on site several Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest were noted in cover while a trickle of Siskins, Goldfinches, Skylarks and a Grey Wagtail passed overhead.

We spent the rest of the morning at Lade where the juvenile Black Tern was still feeding over south lake above numerous wildfowl and grebes. Yet again Chiffchaffs were plentiful with several small flocks along the main track flitting amongst elderberry bushes. On the Desert a few grounded Stonechats, Linnets, a Wheatear and Meadow Pipits, including one very confiding individual. Also noted across the site two Kingfishers, six Little Egrets, eight Grey Herons, two Sparrowhawks, two Kestrels, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Great White Egret.
