Willow Warbler

New Romney - cold, dry and sunny, NE 3 - Well, well what a weird week it has been with Covid-19 finally catching up with us and forcing us into self isolation; at least for the first six days until the all- clear was sounded. I shouldn`t really complain though as it was only a couple of days of flu-like symptoms that laid me really low, and it wasn`t like the Russians were shelling us out of our home, at least not yet anyway...

                                  Stock Dove in the garden

However, that`s enough of that. By Wednesday I was up early and pacing the back garden around dawn from where I could hear a few Siskins and Redwings passing overhead, plus `drumming` Great Spotted Woodpecker, a `yaffling` Green Woodpecker and a singing Mistle Thrush in the park two doors down. Much attention was paid to the garden and the airspace above over the coming days with regular flyovers from Raven, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Mediterranean Gull, plus Stock Dove again under the garden bird feeders and a Greenfinch, at last, actually in the back garden. A walk out north of the town on Friday yielded singing Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs, more Greenfinches, Yellowhammers and a Black Redstart on an old barn in Hope Lane, from where this morning my first singing Willow Warbler of spring was noted, plus a new Cetti`s Warbler. That`s the sum total of my birding interest over the past week, all from around New Romney, while I`m looking forward to getting back down the coast this coming week.

  2. Thanks Ken. Yes, we`re not too far from North Street, Fairfield Road, near the park. Orestone forest in May is good for Nightingale, Turtle Dove, Garden Warbler and the usual range of summer migrants. Visit early though to avoid the dog-walkers. Good birding.
