Turtle Doves

RMCanal Kennardington - Warehorne - mild, cloudy, light airs - We spent most of the morning walking the tracks either side of the canal between the two bridges in perfect weather conditions for bird finding, although migrant numbers proved to be somewhat disappointing. Singles of singing Common Whitethroat and Cetti`s Warbler, several Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps and a few more Reed Warblers was a poor return considering the amount of suitable habitat available, alongside three male Yellowhammers, a few Linnets, Greenfinches, Goldfinches and a Bullfinch. However, things livened up a bit on the return leg along the south side by the railway crossing where a Turtle Dove `purred` from cover and two Nightingales sang off one another from a railway embankment thicket. The usual paucity of waterfowl along the Cut I put down to the presence of Mink, Badger and Fox. Also noted along the way, Green Woodpecker, Buzzard, Kestrel, Pied Wagtail, Skylark, Long-tailed Tit and Reed Bunting, plus Hairy Hawker, Speckled Wood and Orange Tip.

On the way home a pit stop at the Kennardington crossing delivered another Turtle Dove and a singing Nightingale, while a Cuckoo was heard along the canal from the Hamstreet garden centre.
